Welcome to Baobab Maternity Hospital
Baobab Maternity Hospital, a maternity and neonatal hospital to be constructed in Dar es Salaam, will make a world of difference to the region. The hospital will function as a specialist referral hospital focusing on basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care and intensive neonatal care, addressing the most urgent service gaps in the region. Through its choice of services, the hospital will make a major impact on the prevention of maternal and newborn mortality in the region. Its strong emphasis on training and building skills for future generations of health staff will create a ripple off effect in improving maternal and newborn health care in Tanzania. By offering a wide range of maternal health services and making them accessible to all, Baobab Maternity Hospital will be able to make the journey of life a safe one for those most in need.
Baobab Maternity Hospital will be managed by CCBRT - a highly respected non-governmental organisation which already runs a well established hospital and community programme for people living with disabilities, serving 120,000 people with disabilities and their care givers every year.
What does Baobab stand for?
A Baobab is a type of tree indigenous to Africa. This enormous tree, which can grow to 30 metres high and 15 metres wide is called the “Tree of Life” or the “Miracle Tree”. Virtually every part of the tree is useful in some way and it provides much needed resources and nutrition through its fruit and bark. It is believed that some Baobab trees are thousands of years old. There is a huge Baobab tree bordering the site where the new maternity hospital will be built.
